National Christmas Lights Day History Tree Christmas lighting was first used on December 22, 1882, when Edward H. Johnson, a close friend of Thomas Edison, lit up his tree at his New York City residence with 80 incandescent lamps. Before this, people lit their Christmas trees with candles. The dangerous practice resulted in multiple house fires. The electrified Christmas tree was first utilized in the American White House in 1895. Electric Christmas trees started to appear in prominent public places by the middle of the 20th century, but even then, this wasn’t done on a big scale because most people couldn’t afford electric Christmas trees or Christmas lights. The 1960s saw the rise in popularity of Christmas lights among people of all socioeconomic classes and the large-scale exterior decorating of homes by their owners.
